Easing Anxiety through Health Coaching
Author:When anxiety pays a visit
I know when anxiety comes knocking. My stomach locks up, my right eye twitches like a live wire, and then my old friends, the haemorrhoids, make an appearance. For years, I tried to ignore it, to push through. But the body keeps score. And mine was sending distress signals, warning me that unless I found a way to manage the storm inside, I was heading for an implosion.
We live in a world where our minds and bodies have stopped speaking. We rush from one thing to the next, too busy to notice the silent turmoil happening inside us. Left unchecked, the weight of anxiety can become a constant invisible force: a tightness in the chest, a sickening fluttering in the stomach, a mind circling a relentless loop.
When anxiety moves in with you
Anxiety itself isn’t the enemy. Afterall, it kept our ancestors alive, sharpening their senses when a lion lurked in the tall grass. The problem isn’t the occasional spike of fear, it’s when anxiety moves in, unpacks its bags, and refuses to leave.
It’s like that slightly overbearing relative you tolerate in small doses with polite nods and forced smiles. But then, one day, they show up with a suitcase. No discussion, no warning: they’re moving in. You want to protest, tell them no, but they’ve already unpacked. Before you know it, they’ve taken over your space, your routines, your mind. And that’s when the real battle begins.
The unseen battle
Anxiety is an isolated struggle, a battle fought behind closed doors. But it’s not just in your head. It’s in the body: the aching body, the trembling hands, the heart that races in response to the smallest trigger. How on earth can we stand up to it? How do you stand up to something that feels bigger than you? We live in a world that demands quick fixes. They work—for a while. But real change comes from something simpler, something quieter, something that lasts: using your own lifestyle as medicine to take back control of your ‘household’. Health Coaching.
Going back to basics
Health coaching begins by going back to basics, by understanding that the body and mind are one. It’s about building a foundation that supports mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical resilience. Anxiety thrives in a body that is sleep-deprived, malnourished, or moving too little. Can you eat better? Are you feeding your body the right food which helps to make your body-brain link stronger? Are you sleeping enough? Are you resting properly? Are you moving in a way that feels good, not just punishing? Making small simple changes, over time, rewrite our relationship with anxiety.
How health coaching can help
As a health coach, I help clients restore order: adequate sleep, nourishing meals, regular movement, and grounding rituals as simple as turning off your phone or walking through Park Majjistral. These are the weapons against anxiety.
It’s about taking back control, one steady habit at a time. it’s about teaching the mind to slow down, to recognize the triggers that feed anxiety and reclaim the space between those triggers and your response.
Health coaching, in its quiet, determined way, works because it is built on action. It’s about moving forward, even in the smallest of ways. No matter how much anxiety insists on staying, there is always a way to show it the door. One step at a time.
