Living with Anxiety

Author:

Everyone experiences worry from time to time, but for people who live with an anxiety disorder, such emotions are often so distressing and overwhelming. Sometimes, it is difficult to articulate exactly what anxiety is.

Anxiety symptoms can range from restlessness, overthinking, irritability to changes in one’s physiological state such as struggling to breath, sleep, or focus. Gastrointestinal symptoms are also very common, including stomach aches or change in bowel habits. People might have different perceptions of what anxiety is, especially to those involved. However, very common statements include:

  1. A feeling like the world is falling apart and something terrible is going to happen.
  2. It makes you think about past events or check your work multiple times, and still, when you come home you are not sure you did the right thing.
  3. It makes one’s thoughts difficult to slow down.
  4. Like a nervous, tingling feeling in one’s chest.
  5. Feeling constantly on edge or worrying excessively.
  6. Feeling uncomfortable and panicky in social settings, fearing people will judge me or analyse anything I do.
